17. Symmetra
Unfortunately, it feels like Blizzard still doesn’t quite know what to do with Symmetra in Overwatch 2. She’s still primarily a defensive character, but she’s certainly not going to be a lot of players’ first pick in Competitive games. Her turrets can be a huge disruptor for Escort and Hybrid maps, but you’ll likely swap off her once the opposing team gets the payload going. Her primary and alt-fire modes aren’t spectacular either, and she’s still a very niche pick in the current meta.
16. Mei
Mei used to be the bane of everyone’s existence during the early days of Overwatch, but no more. The demon has been nerfed. Her primary fire no longer freezes enemies, which is a huge downgrade from what she got before, though her alt-fire can still be pretty damaging if you’re accurate enough with it. Blizzard continues to be a pretty strong ult, allowing you to freeze all enemies caught within it, but in head-to-head team fights, she isn’t necessarily the most reliable pick.
15. Cassidy
Another victim of the new hero changes in Overwatch 2, Cassidy isn’t quite as strong as he used to be either. His primary fire is still deadly, but his flashbang has been replaced with a new sticky grenade. Not being able to stun enemies makes Cassidy a lot less useful as a DPS hero in Overwatch 2, simply because the rest of his kit can be replicated by other heroes who do a better job of it anyway.
14. Torbjorn
Torbjorn’s in an okay place in Overwatch 2 right now, even if he isn’t quite as mobile as some of the other damage dealers in the game. His turrets continue to serve as a good line of defense and disruption in any game mode, and his own primary fire mode is no slouch either. His Molten Core ult also allows him to spread lava all over the ground to disrupt the enemy team even further, making him even more of a reasonable pick in Competitive matches. It’s unlikely that you’ll stay on Torbjorn for the entire match, especially as your enemies start counter-picking, but he’s definitely in a better state than he was in the first game.
13. Echo
Echo is probably one of the hardest DPS characters to use in Overwatch 2, but also one of the more unpredictable ones thanks to her ult. She boasts high mobility and is even able to fly up into the air for a short period of time to surprise your foes, though we wouldn’t recommend going head-to-head with an opposing Pharah. She offers an element of surprise and can be hard to counter when she gets her ult, which can really throw your enemies off. However, her firing rate isn’t exactly spectacular, and aiming properly while airborne isn’t exactly easy or entirely reliable either. She’s a good flexible pick in most match-ups, but if you’re able to counter your opponents more directly with another hero, it’s probably better to swap.
12. Bastion
Bastion might not have the most impactful ult in the game, but its rework in Overwatch 2 makes it a lot more flexible than just a stationary turret that spams bullets at anything that pops up onscreen. It can’t stay in turret form for too long, and it can’t self-heal anymore, but it’s basically an adjusted version of Soldier: 76 with the ability to melt shields and put an incredible amount of pressure on the enemy team at the right moments. Bastion’s flexibility has certainly helped it rise through the ranks in Overwatch 2, and is proving to be a great pick in almost any scenario.
11. Soldier: 76
Soldier: 76 was designed to be the easiest and most basic hero to pick up and play in Overwatch, and the same holds true in Overwatch 2. He has a sprint, a self-heal, an easy-to-use assault rifle, and the ability to fire off rockets for high damage. The movement buffs in Overwatch 2 have also given him a slight leg up, and he continues to be a solid pick in a lot of match-ups. His hitscan abilities allow him to pick off Pharah in the air, and he’s also just great for putting pressure on enemy shields.
10. Junkrat
If you need just a bit more firepower and disruption than what Soldier or Bastion can offer, Junkrat is still incredibly annoying to play against in Overwatch 2. His traps can completely stall an enemy team’s advancement, and his bombs give him great mobility while also dealing high amounts of damage to his opponents. He can bypass enemy shields easily by lobbing grenades into the backline, or just completely melt them if necessary. Playing Junkrat does require you to have good spatial awareness, however, as simply spamming grenades won’t get you anywhere.
9. Reaper
Reaper continues to be the strongest tank counter in Overwatch 2, allowing players to melt tanks within seconds. He excels at surprising the enemy team by teleporting into their backlines and dealing high amounts of damage with his shotguns up close. The classic tactic of dropping in from high ground with a surprise ult still works wonders here, and now that there’s one less tank to deal with, Reaper has more squishy targets to choose from. His only drawback is that he’s highly ineffective from a long distance, so playing well with Reaper would require you to really get into the enemy’s backlines and disrupt them as much as possible.
8. Ashe
Yet another solid DPS option, Ashe pretty much does what Cassidy does, but better. Her dynamite deals damage, while also helping her create distance from the enemy team when needed. Her rifle’s primary fire is incredibly damaging, and her alt fire is even more powerful and almost akin to a sniper shot, though her aiming is slowed down while in this mode. Finally, her ult lets her summon Bob, who effectively serves as a temporary second tank for your team while also dealing damage to enemies around him. Ashe is just an all-around great DPS hero that you can’t really go wrong with.
7. Hanzo
Hanzo is easily one of the most polarizing heroes in Overwatch, just because people love to play him, but not everyone’s actually good at playing him. He’s still a great sniper in Overwatch 2, with his sonic arrow allowing you to pinpoint enemy positions every few seconds, and his ability to instantly delete any DPS or support character with a headshot is still frightening. He’s not quite as mobile as Genji, but his wall climbing passive does give him some options in terms of mobility.
6. Widowmaker
Similar to Hanzo, Widowmaker is another great sniper option in Overwatch 2, and she’s just a little bit easier to use than Hanzo himself. Her grappling hook makes her extremely mobile, and her sniper rifle can be converted into an automatic rifle whenever she needs to make a quick getaway. Depending on your play style, flick shots with her sniper rifle can also be slightly easier to pull off, allowing you to get more picks for your team. Just like Hanzo, however, how well you do with her depends on how good your aim is.
5. Pharah
Pharah really hasn’t changed all that much from Overwatch, but her power in the air is second to none. Pharah continues to be one of those heroes who can completely wreck a team if they’re not actively trying to counter her. She can rain down rockets on the enemy team, taking out Lucios and Moiras with ease, while also destroying shields. You do need to be careful with hitscan heroes like Soldier and Bastion, however, as it won’t take them much to gun down a Pharah, assuming their aim is even halfway decent. With Overwatch 2’s ping system, Pharah also has the unique ability of being able to scout out enemy positions from the air and pinging them to let her team know exactly where everyone is.
4. Tracer
Since the early days of Overwatch, Tracer is one of the rare few heroes who’s been left almost completely untouched in terms of kit adjustments and balance changes. She’s still one of the trickier heroes to use, as you’ll need to master her blinks and know when to use her recall, but she can cause some serious disruption in the backlines when handled right. The only downside to Tracer is that in the new 5v5 format, her absence in a head-to-head team fight is more keenly felt when she’s busy running around, trying to flank her foes. But if you’re able to get quick kills with Tracer, that won’t be a problem at all.
3. Sombra
Speaking of disruption, no one does it better than Sombra. She’s one of the most annoying heroes to play against, just because of her ability to hack enemies and disable their skills for a short period of time. She’s able to turn invisible, which lets her infiltrate the backlines easily while also hacking health packs to stop enemies from using them. Finally, her ult lets her perform a large AoE hack that completely disrupts all foes caught within it, and essentially turns them into sitting ducks for her team to totally wipe out. Sombra was strong in the first game, and she’s still incredibly strong in Overwatch 2.
2. Sojourn
The newest DPS hero to get added to Overwatch 2, Sojourn is a fairly easy hero to play, but I’ve come to realize that she’s got a high skill ceiling as well. At first glance, she seems remarkably similar to Soldier, but her slide and jump gives her insane mobility, which can make her movements extremely unpredictable. She’s able to hang back to shoot at her foes from a distance, and instantly jump into the air to get a better view of the battlefield and fire at them from above. Her disruptor shot creates space for her team by damaging enemies and slowing them down, and her ult powers up her primary fire, while also piercing through foes that she hits. Sojourn is a real force to reckon with in Overwatch 2, and her damage potential is often overlooked because of how simple her kit appears to be at first.
1. Genji
Finally, there’s little doubt that Genji is one of the absolute strongest DPS characters in Overwatch 2 right now. Thanks to the new role passive, Genji can now benefit from a small speed boost whenever he gets an elimination, and that just synergizes incredibly well with his kit. He’s already getting cooldowns for his dash with every elimination, and with a speed boost on top of that, he’s nearly unstoppable. Again, this all comes down to your skill level with Genji, as he’s not exactly the easiest hero to play. Managing your cooldowns is still important, as is your aim with his throwing stars. But if you’re able to capitalize on his newfound advantages, he can be very difficult to deal with. Genji is still easily countered by heroes like Winston and Moira, so that’s something to watch out for. And that does it for our ranking of all the DPS heroes in Overwatch 2.
