This can be easily done while exploring the open world in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. You will find groups of enemies or soldiers fighting in different parts of the environment, and these are the Skirmishes you are looking for.
Joining Skirmishes in Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Upon approaching an ongoing Skirmish, the game will prompt players to hold ZR in order to focus the camera on the Skirmishes. From there, walk up to the battle and make a choice on which side you will be fighting on, together with the vital information of what rewards there are for winning. Do note that certain Skirmishes will not provide the option to choose sides, so be prepared for anything to happen on the battlefield.
